What it is
Keyword cannibalisation: two of your pages, one keyword
Cannibalisation happens when several pages on your site target the same search. Google has to pick one, the choice can flip between them, and links and clicks get split, so neither page ranks as well as one strong page would. It isn't always a problem: a homepage and a product page both ranking in the top 5 can be a win. It's a problem when the pages swap places or both sit below where one could rank.
We found this on our own site: three of our blog posts were competing for "free keyword rank checker tools", and the best one sat at #35. We merged them into one post and redirected the other two.
How to fix it
Four ways to fix cannibalised keywords
- Merge and redirect. Combine the best of both pages into one and 301-redirect the other. This is usually the strongest fix.
- Re-target one page. If both pages are needed, change one to focus on a different keyword. The keyword clustering tool shows which keywords belong together.
- Set a canonical. For near-duplicates you must keep, point one at the other. Check it with the canonical checker.
- Fix internal links. Link to the page you want to rank using the keyword as anchor text, and stop linking to the other with it.
FAQ
Keyword cannibalization checker FAQ
How does the checker find cannibalisation?
It runs a live Google search for each keyword and lists every result from your domain within the depth you choose. Two or more of your URLs on one keyword is flagged.
How much does it cost?
DataForSEO charges $0.002 per page of 10 results (checked 10 October 2026). Scanning the top 50 costs about 1¢ per keyword, so 30 keywords cost about 30¢.
Can Google Search Console show cannibalisation?
Yes: in the Performance report, filter by a query and open the Pages tab to see which URLs got impressions. This checker shows the live positions in a clean search, which Search Console doesn't.
Is it always bad when two pages rank?
No. Two strong pages in the top 5 can take more of the page. Act when they swap places, or when neither reaches the position one consolidated page could.
