How Much Does Rank Tracking Cost? Real Numbers

A space shuttle launches into space, showcasing powerful rocket engines and USA branding.

Rank tracking costs about $0.002 per keyword check if you buy the raw Google data, or $129 to $549 a month if you buy a subscription. The Google data itself is cheap: DataForSEO charges $0.002 for a page of 10 live results. Subscriptions bundle that data with dashboards, history and other SEO tools.

Here’s where the money goes, a cost-per-check comparison we worked out from live pricing pages, and how to pick the cheapest setup for how often you actually check.

What a single rank check actually costs to produce

A rank check is one Google search for one keyword in one location. Rank trackers don’t scrape Google themselves at scale; most buy results from data providers. DataForSEO’s Google Organic SERP API lists these rates:

ModePrice per 10 resultsSpeed
Standard queue$0.0006About 5 minutes
Priority queue$0.0012Up to 1 minute
Live$0.002About 6 seconds

So checking the top 100 live costs $0.02, and if you stop as soon as your site appears (which is what our tool does), a page-one keyword costs $0.002.

What subscriptions charge per tracked keyword

Suites track your keywords automatically, usually daily. Dividing the monthly price by the keywords included and roughly 30 daily checks gives the effective cost per check:

PlanMonthly priceTracked keywordsCost per keyword per monthPer daily check
Semrush SEO$139500$0.28about $0.009
Ahrefs Lite$129750$0.17about $0.006
SE Ranking Core$1292,000$0.065about $0.002
Semrush Advanced$5495,000$0.11about $0.004

Sources: Semrush pricing, Ahrefs pricing, SE Ranking pricing. Annual billing is 17 to 20% cheaper.

Per check, a fully used subscription isn’t expensive. The cost problem is that you pay for the full allowance every month, whether you check daily or twice a quarter, and the plan includes many tools you may not need.

The real question: how often do you check?

The cheapest option depends almost entirely on frequency. A worked example for 200 keywords, assuming (for illustration) 60% rank on page one:

How oftenChecks a monthPay-per-check (live)Cheapest suite that fits
Monthly200about $1.80$129
Weeklyabout 870about $8$129
Dailyabout 6,000about $55$129

Pay-per-check maths: page-one keywords cost $0.002, the rest up to $0.02 if they’re outside the top 100. At daily frequency for thousands of keywords, a subscription starts to make sense on price alone. Below that, you’re mostly paying for idle allowance.

Hidden costs to watch for

  • Extra locations and devices. Tracking the same keyword on mobile and desktop, or in two cities, usually counts as two keywords against your limit.
  • Update frequency. Cheaper plans may update less often. Check what “tracked” means on the plan you’re buying.
  • Add-ons. AI visibility tracking, extra users and white-label reports are often extra.
  • Depth. Pay-per-check tools cost more for keywords where you rank nowhere, because more results are scanned. Prune keywords you’ll never rank for.

Our take

  • You check occasionally, or for client reports: pay per check. With Keyword Rank Checker, a monthly check of 200 keywords costs under $2 in DataForSEO credits.
  • You check many keywords, in many markets, in bursts: pay per check with the bulk checker. No plan limits to hit.
  • You need daily automated tracking with history, plus backlinks and audits: buy a suite and use it fully. Our Semrush alternative page covers when that’s the better deal.

FAQ

How much does a rank tracker cost per month?

Mainstream suites with rank tracking start at about $129 a month (Ahrefs Lite, SE Ranking Core) and $139 (Semrush SEO), as of 3 October 2026. Pay-per-check tools have no monthly fee.

Why is rank tracking so expensive if the data is cheap?

Subscriptions pay for the software around the data: dashboards, history, alerts, reporting, support and the rest of the SEO suite. If you don’t need those, you’re paying for features you won’t use.

What’s the cheapest way to check keyword rankings?

Google Search Console is free for queries you already appear for. For keywords you choose, paying the raw API cost per check is the cheapest option unless you check thousands of keywords every day.
