Yes, there are free keyword rank checkers that work, but “free” means something different for each one. Google Search Console is free and accurate but only shows keywords you already get impressions for. One-off checkers from Ahrefs and others are free for a single keyword at a time. Keyword Rank Checker has no subscription and checks hundreds of keywords live, but you pay DataForSEO’s raw data cost, usually a fraction of a cent per keyword.
Below is what each free option really gives you, where it stops, and which to use for which job.
Disclosure: we make Keyword Rank Checker. We’ve tried to describe every tool fairly, including where ours isn’t the right choice. Prices checked on 3 October 2026.
The short version
| Tool | What’s free | Where it stops | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Everything | Average position only, no keywords you choose, data is 2 to 3 days old | Every site owner, always |
| Keyword Rank Checker | The tool (no subscription) | You pay DataForSEO about 0.2¢ to 2¢ per keyword; no history or alerts | Live checks of your own keyword list, in any market |
| Ahrefs free Keyword Rank Checker | One-off checks | One keyword at a time, no tracking | Quick spot checks |
| SERPRobot free checker | On-demand checks | Limited free usage; tracking needs a paid plan | Occasional checks |
| Paid suite trials (Semrush, Ahrefs, Mangools) | A trial or a few queries | Time-limited, then $129+ a month for full plans | Testing before you buy a suite |
What “free” means for each type of rank checker
Every live rank check is a real Google search that someone has to pay for. Data providers like DataForSEO charge about $0.002 for each page of 10 results. So a tool that’s “free” is covering that cost somehow: with strict limits, with a trial that ends, with ads, or by passing the cost to you.
Knowing which model a tool uses tells you more than its marketing does.
1. Google Search Console: free, but you can’t choose the keywords
Search Console shows the queries your site already appears for, with clicks, impressions and an average position. It comes straight from Google and costs nothing.
The catch: the position is an average across every searcher, device and location, so “8.4” might mean #3 in Mumbai and #20 in London. You also can’t check a keyword you don’t rank for yet, which is exactly the one you’re trying to win.
2. Keyword Rank Checker: no subscription, you pay the raw data cost
Keyword Rank Checker runs each keyword as a live Google search through your own DataForSEO API login, for the country, city and device you pick. There’s no KRC plan and no keyword limit; DataForSEO bills you directly.
- Cost: about 0.2¢ per keyword when you rank on page one, rising to about 2¢ when you’re outside the top 100 (the tool scans until it finds you).
- What you get: live position, ranking URL, optional search volume, CSV export, and the bulk checker for hundreds of keywords at once.
- What you don’t get: daily scheduled tracking, history charts or alerts. You re-run checks and compare exports.
You’ll need a DataForSEO account, which takes a few minutes to set up.
3. Ahrefs free Keyword Rank Checker: quick one-off checks
Ahrefs offers a free keyword rank checker that looks up a keyword’s top 100 results. It’s handy for a single check, but it’s built to lead you to the paid Rank Tracker, which starts with the Lite plan at $129 a month.
4. SERPRobot: free on-demand checks with paid tracking
SERPRobot offers a free on-demand checker across devices and locations, with a free trial of its tracking service. Fine for occasional checks; regular tracking moves you to a paid plan.
5. Free trials of paid suites
Semrush, Ahrefs and Mangools all let you try their rank trackers. Once the trial ends, full plans are significant: Semrush’s SEO plan is $139 a month for 500 tracked keywords and Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month for 750 (checked on 3 October 2026 on the Semrush and Ahrefs pricing pages). Worth it if you use the whole suite. Expensive if you only need positions.
What 100 keywords a week costs with each option
A worked example: 100 keywords, checked once a week, about 430 checks a month. Positions are illustrative: half the keywords on page one, half outside it.
| Option | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Google Search Console | $0 (but only average positions for queries you already appear for) |
| Keyword Rank Checker | About $5 or less in DataForSEO credits (about $0.43 for the page-one half, up to about $4.33 for the rest) |
| Ahrefs Lite | $129 |
| Semrush SEO plan | $139 |

Why your rank checker and Google never agree
If a tool says #4 and you see #7 when you search, neither is necessarily wrong. Your own searches are personalised by location, history and your signed-in account. A rank checker runs a clean, non-personalised search for one market and device. Always compare like with like: same country or city, same device.
Our take
- Everyone: set up Google Search Console. It’s free and it’s Google’s own data.
- Checking a few keywords now and then: a one-off free checker is enough.
- Checking a real keyword list, in specific markets, without a subscription: that’s what we built Keyword Rank Checker for.
- Need daily automated tracking, history and backlink data: a paid suite earns its price. See our Semrush alternative page for an honest comparison.
FAQ
Is there a completely free keyword rank checker?
Google Search Console is completely free but only shows average positions for queries you already appear for. Tools that check keywords you choose either limit free use or, like Keyword Rank Checker, pass on the small data cost.
How accurate are free rank checkers?
Live checkers that run a real Google search are accurate for the market and device they check at that moment. Results differ from your own browser because your searches are personalised.
Can I check rankings for a specific city for free?
Search Console can’t filter by city. Keyword Rank Checker can check any city, and the local rank checker also shows your local pack position, at the same per-keyword data cost.
Do I need to sign up to use Keyword Rank Checker?
Not with us. You do need a DataForSEO API login, which the tool uses to run each search.
