The 60-character myth
Google cuts titles by width, not by characters
Google truncates titles that are too wide for the results page, roughly 580 pixels on desktop. That's why "about 60 characters" is only a rule of thumb: a title full of narrow letters like "i" and "l" can run past 70 characters, while one with wide letters like "W" and "M" can be cut at 50. This checker measures the width in the font Google uses (Arial at about 20px), so you see the real limit.
- Lead with the keyword. Put what the page is about in the first few words, where it can't be cut.
- Make it specific. "Title Tag Checker: Length, Pixel Width & Preview" beats "Free SEO Tool".
- One title per page. The checker flags pages with no title or more than one.
- Expect rewrites. Google sometimes replaces titles it thinks don't match the search. Clear, accurate titles are rewritten less.
FAQ
Title tag checker FAQ
What is the ideal title tag length?
Aim for under about 580 pixels wide, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Shorter is fine if it says clearly what the page is about.
Why does my title look different in Google?
Google can rewrite titles that are too long, repetitive or don't match the search. It may use your H1 or other text from the page instead.
Is the pixel width exact?
It's a close approximation. The tool measures your title in Arial at Google's display size in your browser. Google's own rendering can differ by a few pixels.
Is the title tag checker free?
Yes, completely. There's no login, no DataForSEO account needed and no limit beyond a fair-use cap to stop abuse.
