How long should it be?

About 920 pixels on desktop, less on mobile

Like titles, descriptions are cut by width. On desktop, Google shows roughly 920 pixels of description text at about 14px Arial, usually 150 to 160 characters. Mobile results show less, closer to 680 pixels, so put the most important words first.

  • Answer the search. Say what the reader gets from the page, in plain words.
  • Include the keyword naturally. Google bolds words that match the search, which draws the eye.
  • Make each one unique. Duplicate descriptions across pages are more likely to be ignored.
  • Expect Google to rewrite it sometimes. It often shows a passage from the page that better matches the query. A clear description still wins for your main keyword.

FAQ

Meta description checker FAQ

What is the best meta description length?

Usually 140 to 160 characters, as long as it stays under about 920 pixels wide. Keep the key point in the first 120 characters for mobile.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly. They affect whether people click your result, and more clicks from the same position mean more traffic.

Why does Google show a different description?

Google picks the text it thinks best matches each search. If your description doesn't answer that search, it may show a passage from the page instead.
