What is llms.txt?

A plain-text map of your site for AI tools

llms.txt is a proposed standard (from llmstxt.org) for a Markdown file at the root of a website, like example.com/llms.txt. It gives AI tools a short summary of the site and links to the pages that matter most, without the menus, ads and scripts of the full HTML.

Our take: it's cheap to add and useful for documentation-heavy sites, but no major AI search engine has said it uses llms.txt for ranking or citations. Treat it as a tidy extra, not a replacement for pages that rank. To see whether AI actually mentions you, use the AI visibility checker.
