What Is AI Visibility? LLM visibility explained, and how to measure and improve it.
How ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews decide which brands to recommend, the metrics that matter, and a practical plan to get mentioned more often.
What AI visibility means
AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, your brand appears in answers generated by AI assistants and AI search engines. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best accounting software for freelancers?" or sees a Google AI Overview for "best running shoes for flat feet", the answer names a few brands and cites a few websites. Your AI visibility is your share of those answers.
It's the AI-era version of ranking on page one, with one big difference: there's no single position to report. An AI answer either mentions you or it doesn't, it either links to your site or it doesn't, and it says something good, neutral or bad about you. Visibility is measured across many questions and many engines, not one keyword.
AI visibility vs LLM visibility vs GEO
You'll see several overlapping terms:
- LLM visibility is the same idea, named after the large language models (LLMs) behind ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. People use it interchangeably with AI visibility.
- AI search visibility usually puts the focus on AI features inside search engines, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus answer engines like Perplexity.
- GEO (generative engine optimization), also called AEO (answer engine optimization) or LLM SEO, is the work you do to improve your visibility. AI visibility is the outcome you measure.
Put simply: GEO is the strategy, AI visibility is the scoreboard.
Why it matters now
More buying research now starts, or ends, inside an AI answer. Someone comparing tools, agencies or products can get a shortlist from ChatGPT or an AI Overview without visiting ten websites. If you're not in that shortlist, you never make it to the comparison stage, however well your pages rank further down.
AI answers also concentrate attention. A results page has ten organic slots plus ads and features. An AI answer typically names three to seven brands. Being one of them is worth more, and being left out costs more.
How AI decides which brands to mention
AI assistants draw on two sources of knowledge:
- What the model learned in training. Brands that are widely and consistently described across the web, in reviews, comparisons, forums, news and documentation, become part of the model's general knowledge.
- What it retrieves live. With web search switched on (as in ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews), the assistant runs searches, reads the top pages and summarises them. Here, classic SEO matters a lot: pages that rank well are the ones that get read and cited.
In both cases, the AI favours brands that many independent, trusted sources describe clearly and consistently for a given use case. That's why being listed on the pages the AI cites is often the fastest lever you have.
The five metrics to track
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | The share of relevant prompts where the answer names your brand. This is your headline AI visibility score. |
| Citation rate | How often the AI links to your website as a source. Citations send traffic and show the AI trusts your content. |
| Share of voice | Your mentions compared with competitors' across the same prompts. |
| Engine coverage | Where you show up: you can be strong in Perplexity and invisible in ChatGPT. |
| Cited sources | The third-party sites the AI relies on for your topic. These are your best outreach targets. |
Sentiment and position within the answer (named first, or as an afterthought) are useful extras once you have the basics.
How to measure your AI visibility
- Write 10–30 prompts your customers would actually ask. Mix category questions ("best CRM for small agencies"), comparison questions ("HubSpot vs Pipedrive alternatives") and problem questions ("how do I track leads from WhatsApp").
- Run them across several engines. At minimum ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, in the country you sell in.
- Record mentions, citations and competitors for every answer.
- Repeat monthly. AI answers vary between runs, so trends matter more than a single result.

How to improve your AI visibility
1. Get listed where the AI is already looking
Look at which sites the AI cites for your prompts: review platforms, "best X" listicles, industry publications, Reddit threads, comparison pages. Earning a fair mention on those pages is often faster than ranking your own page, because the AI already trusts them.
2. Make your pages easy to quote
State plainly what you do, who it's for, what it costs and how you differ, near the top of the page. Use clear headings that match real questions, short paragraphs and specific facts. Vague marketing copy gives an AI nothing to cite.
3. Publish honest comparison content
"X vs Y", "best tools for Z" and "alternatives to W" pages match exactly how people prompt AI. Include competitors fairly, with specifics; one-sided pages are less likely to be trusted.
4. Keep your brand description consistent
Use the same name, category and one-line description across your site, social profiles, directories and press mentions. Consistency helps models connect your brand to the right category.
5. Keep winning classic SEO
Web-search-enabled assistants and AI Overviews mostly read pages that already rank. Track your Google positions with a rank checker, and check whether your keywords trigger an AI Overview with the AI Overview checker.
6. Add structured data and keep pages fresh
Schema markup for your organisation, products, FAQs and reviews makes facts unambiguous, and updated dates and current information help with queries where freshness matters.
Common mistakes
- Testing only your brand name. Asking "what is [your brand]?" tells you little. Test the category questions where buyers haven't chosen yet.
- Trusting a single run. AI answers change from run to run. Look at rates across many prompts and repeat runs.
- Ignoring citations. A mention without a link is good for awareness; a citation is what sends visitors.
- Treating it as separate from SEO. Most of what improves AI visibility (authority, clear content, mentions on trusted sites) improves rankings too.

FAQ
AI visibility questions
What is AI visibility in simple terms?
It's how often AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand when people ask questions in your category.
Is LLM visibility the same as AI visibility?
Yes, in practice. LLM visibility refers to the large language models behind AI assistants. Both terms describe how visible your brand is in AI-generated answers.
What is a good AI visibility score?
It depends on your category and competitors. As a rough guide, being mentioned in under 20% of relevant prompts means AI rarely recommends you, 20–50% means you're in the conversation, and over 50% is strong. Compare yourself with competitors on the same prompts.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Answers that use live web search can change within weeks of you earning new mentions or ranking better. Changes that rely on a model's training data take longer, because models are retrained periodically.
Can I check my AI visibility for free?
Yes. Our AI visibility checker is free to use with your own DataForSEO account: you pay only the small per-answer API cost, with no subscription.
