Why local rankings differ

Google ranks you differently in every city

For anything with local intent, such as "dentist", "coworking space" or "best biryani", Google changes the results based on where the searcher is. Checking from the wrong city, or from your own office, gives you a number your customers never see.

  • Organic position in the city you pick, on mobile or desktop.
  • Local pack position: whether your business appears in the map results, matched by website or business name.
  • City presets for major Indian, US, UK, UAE, Canadian and Australian cities, plus any custom location code.

How to check local keyword rankings

  1. Add your DataForSEO API login once. It stays in your browser.
  2. Enter your website, keywords and business name as it appears on Google Maps.
  3. Pick a city from the presets, or choose "Custom location code" for any city, region or postcode Google supports.
  4. Run the check. You'll see your organic position, your local pack position and the ranking URL for each keyword.

Running a multi-location business? Check the same keyword list once per city and compare the exports. Find codes for smaller towns in DataForSEO's location list.

What is a local rank checker?

A tool that checks your Google ranking as a searcher in a specific city or area would see it, instead of a national average. This one also reports whether your business appears in the local pack (the map results).

How is the local pack position matched?

A local pack result counts as yours if it links to your website's domain, or if its business name contains the name you enter. Add your exact Google Business Profile name for the best match.

Is this the same as a Google Maps grid tracker?

No. Grid trackers check Google Maps from dozens of points across a city. This tool checks the regular Google results page for a whole city, including its local pack. It's the right check for city-level SEO and a cheap first look at local visibility.

Why does my local ranking change with the device?

Mobile results lean harder on location and show the local pack more prominently. Check on Mobile for "near me" style searches, since that's where most of them happen.

How much does a local rank check cost?

About 0.2¢ per keyword when you rank on page one, and up to about 2¢ when you're not in the top 100, paid to DataForSEO from your own account. There's no subscription.
