The guide

What is AI visibility, and how do you improve it?

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often, and how prominently, your brand appears in answers from AI assistants and AI search: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. When someone asks "what's the best tool for X?", the AI usually names a handful of brands and cites a few sources. Being one of them is the new version of ranking on page one.

Unlike classic SEO, there's no single position to track. Visibility is about whether you're mentioned, whether your site is cited, and how you compare to competitors across many prompts and engines.

How this AI visibility checker works

  1. You enter your brand, website, category and optionally a few competitors.
  2. You add up to 10 prompts, phrased the way customers ask, or click Suggest prompts.
  3. Each prompt is sent live to the AI engines you choose through the DataForSEO AI Optimization API, with web search switched on so answers reflect current sources. Google AI Overviews are fetched from a live Google search.
  4. Every answer is scanned for your brand name, your domain and your competitors, and every cited source is checked against your website.
  5. You get a visibility score, a per-engine breakdown, share of voice, the most-cited sources, and the full text of every answer.

How to read your AI visibility score

Your score is the share of answers that mention your brand. A citation (a link to your site) counts as a mention too, and is the strongest result: it means the AI used your content as evidence.

  • 0–20%: AI rarely brings you up. Focus on being covered by the sources it already trusts.
  • 20–50%: you're in the conversation for some prompts. Find the prompts and engines where competitors win.
  • 50%+: strong visibility. Protect it by keeping key pages fresh and well cited.

AI answers vary from run to run, so treat one check as a snapshot. Re-run the same prompts every few weeks and compare the exported CSVs.

How to improve your visibility in AI search

  • Get onto the sources AI cites. The "Most-cited sources" panel shows the review sites, listicles, forums and publishers the AI relies on for your prompts. Earning a mention there is often faster than ranking your own page.
  • Answer the question directly. Pages that state clearly what you do, who it's for, pricing and how you compare are easier for AI to quote.
  • Be consistent about your brand. Use the same name, category and description across your site, social profiles and directories.
  • Publish comparison and "best of" content that honestly includes you, with specifics AI can cite.
  • Keep winning classic SEO. AI Overviews and web-search-enabled assistants lean heavily on pages that already rank. Use our rank checker to track those positions.

What does an AI visibility check cost?

The tool is free and runs on your own DataForSEO account. Each answer costs the DataForSEO fee plus the AI provider's fee, which depends on the engine and on web search. That's typically about half a cent to a few cents per answer, and a Google AI Overview check is about 0.4¢. The live counter under the button shows exactly what you've spent.

FAQ

AI visibility checker FAQ

Which AI engines does it check?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Anthropic's Claude and Google AI Overviews. Pick any combination for each run.

Is the AI visibility checker free?

Yes. There's no subscription. It uses your own DataForSEO API account, so you pay only the raw cost of each AI answer you request.

Why do results change between runs?

AI assistants don't give identical answers every time, and their web search results change too. Run the same prompts regularly and look at the trend, not a single answer.

What's the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention means the answer names your brand or domain. A citation means the AI linked to a page on your website as a source. Citations are the stronger signal.

Is my DataForSEO login stored?

No. It stays in your browser and is passed straight through to DataForSEO with each request. Nothing is saved on our server.
